3D FRC – Fiber Reinforced Concrete

The construction industry has been working with composite materials for thousands of years for concrete. And manual insertion of reinforcing bars into concrete has been carried out for a long time (for fiberglass it is 50 years, and for rebar more than 100 years). But researchers are now taking concrete reinforcement a step further by adding structural fibers to concrete through a process called continuous fiber 3D printing (CF3D). By using fibers ranging from carbon to fiberglass to Kevlar, the resulting concrete product is stronger yet lighter.
